A pregnant woman, names withheld has been killed by armed herdsmen in Ekiti State. The incidence took place at Orin-Ekiti, in Ido-Osi Local Government area in the mainly agrarian state.
Sources told our correspondent that the woman was shot and that the herdsmen pounced on her corpse inflicting deep wounds on her abdomen. There were conflicting reports on the identity of the woman. One source she is of Tiv origin.
The Oodua Nationalist Coalition, (ONAC) state coordinator Adeolu Sanusi in a chat with Irohinoodua described the killing as callous. He said “The pregnant woman was attacked in the most vicious manner. She was with her children. They shot at the children who took to their heels. They followed up by hacking the woman to death. She was brutally murdered.
They were not done but went ahead to cut her womb.” Sanusi said it was less important that the woman was Tiv, saying that Ekiti people are also perpetual targets of the herdsmen.
The incidence took place this morning. A native of the town who sought anonymity blamed the herdsmen for the attack.
He said“They are heavily armed. They have taken over the forest with their weapons. This has been going on for a long time. They rape, they rob our people and they also kill and maim. Our people can no longer go to their farms. They have abandoned farming and this has led to hunger in the land.”
The native said following the killing of a Fulani man the previous day in Ikole Local government, the State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose had summoned an emergency meeting with the hope of stemming possible backlash of the Benue crisis in Ekiti State.
